Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injury
A spinal cord injury is damage done to the spinal cord that results in loss of function.  Spinal cord injuries typically occur when a vertebrae is dislocated, fractured, or compressed – often times in a car accident, gunshot wound or a bad fall.  These injuries can crush and ultimately destroy nerve cell extensions (axons) resulting in loss of sensation and motor function.  Other symptoms may include chronic pain, spasticity, fatigue, insomnia, loss of bowel/bladder control, sexual dysfunction, blood clots, muscle contracts, depression and anxiety. Many patients who are long term sufferers of a Spinal Cord Injury have secondary complications from prescription drugs. They can suffer with ulcers, nausea, intestinal tract complications, lack of appetite, internal or external hemorrhaging and depression
Medical Cannabis and Spinal Cord Injury
Many spinal cord injury patients can dramatically reduce their prescription drug intake by using medical cannabis.  Cannabis is a natural pain reliever and is an excellent choice for patients suffering from chronic pain.  More indica dominant strains can be fantastic for pain relief, sleep, anxiety and depression. Indica dominant strains, especially those higher in CBD, have also been shown to treat spasticity. Sativa dominant strains can help with depression, fatigue and lack of appetite.  Most patients with spinal cord injury prefer the use of edibles because of their long lasting pain relief.  Inhalation is still an excellent delivery method because of its rapid onset in relieving symptoms, however edibles tend to provide more of a body pain reliving effect that can last longer compared to inhaled cannabis smoke or vapor.
