RSD (Complex Regional Pain Syndromes Type I)
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is a Chronic pain condition that typically effects a patient’s extremities. CPRS Type 1 is different from type 2 because it does not follow a distinct nerve injury.  Type 1 occurs after an illness or injury that did not directly damage the nerves in a patient’s affected limb.  About 90% of people with CPRS have Type 1.  The typical affected areas include the arms, legs, hands, or feet. The condition usually occurs after some kind of injury or trauma to the area and is attributed to excessive responses of portions of the sympathetic nerve system. RSD is commonly characterized by an extreme and continuous sense of pain (burning, shooting, stabbing, aching, grinding and throbbing), dystonia, muscle spasms, swelling, discoloration of the affected area, joint stiffness, decreased mobility, motor dysfunction and profuse sweating; symptoms generally worsen over time. and/or shoulders. It is not uncommon for the skin that covers the affected are to become extremely sensitive, swollen or inflamed. Typically RSD begins with a burning sensation in the arms, fingers, and palms. Causalgia and CPRS are not psychological disorders however the constant pain and reduced quality of life has been known to cause psychological problems including high rates of depression and suicide.
Medical Cannabis and RSD
CBD treatment is excellent for treating patients with RSD without any psychoactive side effects.  Strains high in CBD content or even CBD rich edibles, oils and tinctures are excellent at treating extreme nerve pain, calming down muscle spasms and reducing inflammation and joint stiffness.  Topical lotions can also be used to minimize pain and loosen stiff joints. Products higher in CBN are also very successful at treating muscle spasms, convulsions, and nerve pain.  It does have a mild sedating effect which can be excellent for patients suffering from insomnia.  CBN has antidepressant qualities and is sometimes referred to as a natural aspirin but is three times stronger. Heavier indica strains high in THC are excellent for patients who might be struggling with insomnia and they can also be excellent at treating pain, stress or anxiety.  Sativa strains high in THC are known for their energetic and uplifting properties and are excellent for patients who might be battling depression or have lost their appetite.
