Causalgia

Causalgia
Causalgia is a rare chronic-pain condition which directly affects the nerves and blood vessels of one or more extremities. It is sometimes referred to as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CPRS) and is very closely related to Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome (RSD). Causalgia is commonly characterized by an extreme and continuous sense of pain (burning, shooting, stabbing, aching, grinding and throbbing), cramping, muscle spasms, swelling, discoloration of the affected area, joint stiffness, decreased mobility, motor dysfunction and profuse sweating; these symptoms generally worsen over time.  Causalgia is usually caused by brachial plexus injuries, involving nerves that run from the neck to the arm. The disruption of neural signals causes pain and increased release of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which causes vascular symptoms including poor circulation, stiff joints, dry or scaly skin and changes in sweating. Causalgia may initially affect an arm or a leg and eventually spread throughout the entire body. Causalgia and CPRS are not psychological disorders however the constant pain and reduced quality of life has been known to cause psychological problems including high rates of depression and suicide.
Medical Cannabis and Causalgia
CBD treatment is excellent for treating patients with causalgia without any psychoactive side effects.  Strains high in CBD content or even CBD rich edibles, oils and tinctures are excellent at treating extreme nerve pain, calming down muscle spasms and reducing inflammation and joint stiffness.  Topical lotions can also be used to minimize pain and loosen stiff joints. Products higher in CBN are also very successful at treating muscle spasms, convulsions, and nerve pain.  It does have a mild sedating effect which can be excellent for patients suffering from insomnia.  CBN has antidepressant qualities and is sometimes referred to as a natural aspirin – but is three times stronger. Heavier indica strains higher in THC are excellent for patients who might be struggling with insomnia and they can also be excellent at treating pain, stress or anxiety.  Sativa strains higher in THC are known for their energetic and uplifting properties, and are excellent for patients who might be battling depression or have lost their appetite
